Tonic+Ginger@The Old Synagogue - Fremantle | This is why we can have good things!
Fremantle's ever burgeoning, and improving, food venues has a new and significant player. Vacant for many years The Old Synagogue on the corner of Parry Street and South Terrace is a vibrant addition to the port city's food resume.
Comprising a clutch of varied spaces and eating options, the venues' focus is on ultra casual dining. It had only been launched the evening before we strolled into its funky Tonic+Ginger restaurant.
Homed in a beautiful high-vaulted room that pays homage to the heritage listed building, Tonic+Ginger exudes cool. It is half full but the hum was very low and no yelling to be heard across the table is required.
Ex-Sweetwater Chef Leigh Power has crafted an edgy Asian fusion menu replete with unusual combinations with Tempura Broccoli, Wasabi Caramel, Tofu Curd and Nori Chili Dust being an example.
Being long time duck fans we ordered Duck Larb with coriander, chili, spring onion and roasted rice $19.
We teamed this with a Green Papaya salad with chili, coriander and tamarind $10. On their own superb - but when combined the flavours were sublime.
We followed these with Pork and Garlic Chive dumplings $7, Oxtail Pot sticker dumplings $7 and a complimentary Steamed Prawn and Ginger dumpling dish $7.
A truly first class lunch and one of the best we have had for years.
Watch this place, its going off and it was only day two when we visited.
Great blog, Anthony! I enjoy your photos and prose.
