{fallow} ~ left untilled or unsown after plowing
We were lucky enough to get a table on opening day in June last year for what would be the start of a mini love affair with this continually surprising “little” place.
At this end of William Street, Fallow sticks out like the proverbial sore thumb amongst the myriad of Cantonese, Korean and Vietnamese dining houses - and its a breath of fresh air.
Admittedly day one (for them and us) was not going well - staff were struggling with the touch screen tills and our beer order was flubbed by an anxious floor manager.
Not an eyebrow was raised as we pointed out the error and we did not care that we got the wrong bottle - a refund was back in my account before we had our first sip of the correct beverage.
Now, almost a year later, we were on our third visit to this skinny, buzzing ode to post-industrial chic.
Everything today has exceeded our previous experiences here - the kitchen has found its feet, as has the wine list and the service. And on a warm February Saturday, it was light jacket weather in our chilly, cute blue booth.
After a perfectly chilled Pandini Prosseco, the oysters rolled in. Topped with a deep, sharp eschallot dressing, they were fab and one each was enough.
Next to arrive was an incredible kingfish ceviche. Adorned with sweet potato crisps, the combo of kingfish, mango, red chilli and coconut was the dish of the day - that was until the Tandoori chicken empanadas lobbed.
Hold the phone - this unremarkable looking twosome of oven-charred morsels were a taste explosion. Filled with spicy, smokey chicken, this is beer food heaven! And the accompanying coriander chutney was a first for us and made the dish exceptional.
This is a kitchen at the top of it’s game!
Lookout Shirley’s - there’s a new sheriff in town.
